As part of Governor Kathy Hochul’s plan to simplify access to higher education in New York, significant changes are underway in the enrollment process of the state’s SUNY and CUNY schools.
The new measures, outlined in Hochul’s 2023 State of the State agenda, aim to assist high school seniors on their path to higher education through more personalized and proactive communication.
In the upcoming fall semester, SUNY is slated to automatically accept 125,000 students outside of New York City into their local community colleges, while CUNY is set to do the same for 65,000 students within the city.
Further, both institutions will provide enhanced support for students navigating college enrollment and financial aid applications, including enrollment coaching and tutorials. Additionally, the state’s Excelsior Scholarship application is now open online and will be accepted until the end of August.
